Is AI Killing Freelance Writing?

It looks that way from where I’m sitting.

I’ve had a tough time recently with my freelance writing. I suppose the struggle began when AI became more common place. Although freelancing has always had its challenges, it’s just never been this difficult. I know a lot of articles on sites like Medium are about how to make money and get more work. So, if you’re looking for advice on those things, sorry, but you won’t find it here,

I’ll backtrack a little bit to add some context. I began freelancing over four years ago for content mills. The pay worked out as £5 or £6 per hour, but I saw it as my training ground. I learned things and gradually got slightly higher-paid work. I was happy to be paid what worked out as a little above the minimum wage. The extra compensation covered unpaid admin tasks and a very small amount of holiday pay, at least when I had consistent work.

The first AI problem I had was when an agency I worked with switched to AI. I have a couple of niches but am not an expert in the sense that I have a degree in those subjects or have worked in those industries. This agency switched to using AI for anything that wasn’t written by experts. So, I was replaced.
